SmartWater is guaranteed to last for a minimum period of five years. In practice it could last longer depending on how much has been applied and if the marked item is stored outdoors or indoors. You can periodically check your marked property using an ultraviolet torch – available on our online shop here.

Smartwater has partnered with a number of church insurers over the last 10 years – protecting around 23,000 churches in the process.

In many cases, the annual license fee that SmartWater normally attracts, is covered by the insurer and the church only need purchase the SmartWater solution and signage, ad-hoc, when required.

However, there are occasions when a church moves from one of these SmartWater-partnered insurers to an insurer that has no pre-existing arrangement with SmartWater. During these transitions, it is important that the church is aware of the fact that, in order to ensure continuation of service, the annual license that was previosuly covered by the last insurance company, is now payable by the church.

If you have recently moved from one insurer to another, and are not aware of the your present situation with regards to SmartWater, we would recommend that you complete our Church Quote Form.

No. The SmartWater deterrent is powered by our convictions and thus it is essential that the police can place a criminal at a specific crime scene using your unique forensic code. For this reason it is essential that a bottle of SmartWater is registered to just one church location.

Where possible, we would always recommend that SmartWater is applied directly to the surface of the metal. Applying SmartWater on top of a ‘barrier’ such as Patternation Oil could affect the adherence and allow for easier removal, though it will not directly impede detection. As an alternative, SmartWater could be applied to the untreated underside, so long as there is access.

If re-applying SmartWater, please attempt to apply the new solution to areas that have not, previously, been marked. If uncertain, please check for the presence of a previous application using an ultraviolet light (long wave, 365nm) – where any areas previously marked will glow a bright yellow-green. By following this guidance, you will help simplify analysis in the event of theft and subsequent recovery of the marked item.

Yes, each pack includes an adequate supply of external deterrent signage. Displaying this signage proves that the church is actively protecting its property. This deters criminals and makes a prosecution and conviction more likely in the event of a theft.

SmartWater signs are best displayed where criminals might gain access to items at risk. This could be a wall adjacent to a low-level roof, a drainpipe providing access to the roof or perhaps next to a lightning conductor. Perimeter fencing and gates permitting entry to the church also present an ideal location for erecting signage, thus deterring thieves before they gain entry to the site.

Areas of the church that are not generally overlooked are also good, though areas of poor visibility such as the inside of a porch should be avoided.

SmartWater use the following formula, to calculate how much coverage you will get out of each pack size, 1ml of SmartWater traceable liquid = 1 linear metre of coverage (i.e. a 50ml bottle of SmartWater traceable liquid will cover 50 linear metres of external metal).

PLEASE NOTE – The dotted line is purely for illustrative purposes – SmartWater should always be applied in a continuous, unbroken line.

SmartWater can be applied by near enough anyone and no special / formal training is required. In some cases, you may wish to employ the services of a contractor, hire scaffolding or large ladders to apply SmartWater.  Anyone considering working at height to apply SmartWater should make sure that they read any working at height guidance beforehand.

SmartWater continues to partner with a number of church insurers and as a result, pricing is usually held at a preferential rate. In order to find out how much SmartWater will cost for your church, please complete our quote form by following the below link.

The most effective way of deterring criminals is to increase their chances of getting caught. Traceability makes it more difficult for a thief to sell on their stolen goods, because through traceability comes accountability – and the likelihood of proven guilt. Because the police regularly check for SmartWater on recovered stolen property and actively raise awareness of it, SmartWater is well known and feared by criminals.

With hundreds of convictions and a 100% conviction rate in court to our name, criminals are aware of our power to place them at the crime scene and secure a conviction. By displaying SmartWater THIEVES BEWARE® deterrent stickers, you are sending out a powerful warning to any would-be thieves.

During independent research, in which over 100 criminals were interviewed, 74% of those interviewed stated that they would not break into a building with a SmartWater THIEVES BEWARE® deterrent label on display.

Your SmartWater traceable liquid carries a chemical code which is unique to your church – we never make the same SmartWater code twice.

The SmartWater chemical code within this liquid is stored, together with your church’s details, on our secure database which is maintained to the highest international standards of ISO27001.

Should your metal be stolen and subsequently recovered by the police, our forensic scientists can analyse traces of SmartWater on the item to identify the unique chemical code and link it back to the church via the database, thus establishing the true owner.
